And Todays Reading Is
PRAYER FOR PEACE
You are the peace of all things calm
You are the place to hide from harm
You are the light that shines in dark
You are the heart's eternal spark
You are the door that's open wide
You are the guest who waits inside
You are the stranger at the door
You are the calling of the poor
You are my Lord and with me still
You are my love, keep me from ill
You are the light, the truth, the way
You are my Saviour this very day. | (Celtic oral tradition - 1st millennium)

*CALL TO CONTINUING WORSHIP | (based on Psalm 19:1-2, 7-8)
One: Heaven is declaring God’s glory;
Many: the sky is proclaiming his handiwork.
One: One day gushes the news to the next,
Many: and one night informs another what needs to be known.
Many: The Lord’s Instruction is perfect,
One: reviving one’s very being.
Many: The Lord’s laws are faithful,
One: making naive people wise.
Many: The Lord’s regulations are right, gladdening the heart.
All: The Lord’s commands are pure, giving light to the eyes.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
O God, too often, we like so many read your word with colored glasses that let us see what we want to see and not what you have for us. We have our favorite passages and artfully dodge the harsh or dense passages of scripture. Give us the strength, like Jacob to struggle with you through scripture; give us the wisdom to put our best thoughts to the tests of your thoughts; give us the courage to not only hear but also to heed your call even when it takes us from our comfortable messes through the dessert into your renewed reality. Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from The Second Helvetic Confession of 1561)
We believe and confess the canonical Scriptures of the holy prophets and apostles of both Testaments to be the true Word of God, and to have sufficient authority of themselves, not of men. For God himself spoke to the fathers, prophets, apostles, and still speaks to us through the Holy Scriptures. And in this Holy Scriptures, the universal Church of Christ has the most complete exposition of all that pertains to a saving faith, and also to the framing of a life acceptable to God; and in this respect it is expressly commanded by God that nothing be either added to or taken from the same.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
