To What End Hospitality

PRAYER FOR PEACE
You are the peace of all things calm
You are the place to hide from harm
You are the light that shines in dark
You are the heart's eternal spark
You are the door that's open wide
You are the guest who waits inside
You are the stranger at the door
You are the calling of the poor
You are my Lord and with me still
You are my love, keep me from ill
You are the light, the truth, the way
You are my Saviour this very day.
(celtic oral tradition - 1st millennium)

PRELUDE  |   I Need Thee Every Hour | arr. Mark Hayes

*CALL TO CONTINUING WORSHIP from Psalm 138
One: We give thanks to you with all our hearts, LORD.
Many: We sing your praise before all other gods.
One: We bow toward your holy temple and thank your name
Many: for your loyal love and faithfulness because you have made your name and word greater than everything else.
One: On the day we cried out, you answered us.
Many: You encouraged us with inner strength,
One: Your faithful love lasts forever, LORD!
Many: Don’t let go of what your hands have made.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We pause in our busy-ness to confess to our busy-ness. We admit that we get busy to fill in the empty spots. We do things so we don’t have to stop and think about what we’re doing. We work in the kitchen of your world and seldom look out the window to see neighbors or nature. We easily slide into old priorities that no longer are your priorities. Forgive us and help us to receive the comfort of your grace and presence so we can stop and listen to you. Amen.

*SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION

*DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Friends, believe the good news of the gospel:
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

*THE GLORIA
Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me,
and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me,
and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.

World without end, without end. Amen.
World without end, without end. Amen.
World without end, without end. Amen.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE
The peace of Christ is with you
And also with you.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from the Confession of 1967
Biblical visions and images of the rule of Christ, such as a heavenly city, a father’s house, a new heaven and earth, a marriage feast, and an unending day culminate in the image of the kingdom. The kingdom represents the triumph of God over all that resists his will and disrupts his creation. Already God’s reign is present as a ferment in the world, stirring hope in men and preparing the world to receive its ultimate judgment and redemption. With an urgency born of this hope, the church applies itself to present tasks and strives for a better world. It does not identify limited progress with the kingdom of God on earth, nor does it despair in the face of disappointment and defeat. In steadfast hope, the church looks beyond all partial achievement to the final triumph of God.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
