  •  WE GATHER IN GOD’S NAME

    FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF HOMEWOOD
    MISSION STATEMENT

Through the grace of God, faith in Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we prayerfully seek to discern God’s will for this congregation and to reach beyond ourselves to feed the hungry, body and soul. Adopted by Session 7/31/17

    PRAYER FOR PEACE

    Peace Prayer of Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

    PRELUDE

    *CALL TO CONTINUING WORSHIP
God is in the midst of the city, and it shall not be moved.
Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations God has brought on the earth.
Through the joy and challenge of daily living,
God is faithful to us still.
We gather in thanksgiving, with open hearts and open minds, seeking to offer God our worship and praise.

*HYMN 275 ||| A Mighty Fortress Is Our God ||| Ein` Feste Burg

    CALL TO CONFESSION
Since all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, we all are called to confess our shortcomings, trusting in God’s grace.

    *PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of transformation, we confess that we are stuck in our ways, resistant to change that would draw us closer to you and to the beloved community you intend. We refuse to hear your Spirit who calls out to us in truth. We seek freedom for ourselves, ignoring the oppression of others. Have mercy on us, O God. Forgive our waywardness, our negligence, and our inability to receive good news and act upon it. Grant that we may live our lives through the faith we have in Jesus.
    (silent prayer)
    Amen.

    *DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Beloved, we are justified by grace through faith. In all things, our gracious God offers us salvation. Believe the good news:
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

    WELCOME AND CHURCH COMMUNICATIONS

    WE HEAR GOD’S WORD

    PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

FIRST SCRIPTURE READING ||| Psalm 46
1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; 3though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. 4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. 6The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. 7The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth. 9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10‘Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.’ 11The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

    SPECIAL MUSIC

SECOND SCRIPTURE READING ||| John 8:31-36
31Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.' 33They answered him, ‘We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, “You will be made free”?’ 34Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
