  •  WE GATHER IN GOD’S NAME

    FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF HOMEWOOD
    MISSION STATEMENT

    Through the grace of God, faith in Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we prayerfully seek to discern God’s will for this congregation and to reach beyond ourselves to feed the hungry, body and soul. Adopted by Session 7/31/17

    PRAYER FOR PEACE
    Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I offer words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.
    ~Henri Nouwen
    PRELUDE

    *CALL TO CONTINUING WORSHIP
    Sing to the Lord a new song!
    Let us join all the saints in praising God.
    Sing to the Lord a new song!
    For the glory of God fills heaven and earth.

    *HYMN 326 ||| For All the Saints ||| Sine Nomine
    CALL TO CONFESSION
    The redeeming love of God in Jesus Christ extends from generation to generation, keeping us in life and in death and in life everlasting. Together, let us seek God’s forgiveness.

    *PRAYER OF CONFESSION
    God of the ages, as we remember the saints who have gone before us, we are grateful for their witness and humbled by their example. Though they have marked well the path of faith, following in that way is hard for us. We drift and waver. We resist and rebel. Remind us that the saints before us were not perfect, just forgiven, and saved by grace. We ask for that forgiveness, and we pray for the courage to trust in that grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    (silent prayer)
    Amen.

    *DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
    The hope to which we are called is the glorious inheritance of all the saints, the immeasurable greatness of God’s power for us who believe. This is good news!
    In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

    WE HEAR GOD’S WORD

    PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

    FIRST SCRIPTURE READING ||| Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18
    1In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: 2I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, 3and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. 15As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. 16I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: 17"As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. 18But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever — for ever and ever."

    SECOND SCRIPTURE READING ||| Luke 6:20-31
    20Then he looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. 24But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 26Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets." 27“But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you.

    WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

    *HYMN 463 ||| How Firm a Foundation ||| Foundation

    *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH ||| The Apostles’ Creed
    I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

    OFFERTORY

    *DOXOLOGY 606 ||| Old Hundredth
    Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
    Praise Him, all creatures here below;
    Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
    Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

    *PRAYER OF DEDICATION
    For the blessings of this and all our days, we thank you, gracious God. Accept, we pray, not just this money but also our lives freely offered in gratitude for all you have done for us. Use them both, in this place and wherever you might take us. Amen.

    ALL SAINTS’ DAY PRAYER
    God, we remember those Saints who have gone before us;
    We lament their passing,
    And honor their legacy.
    We give thanks for all we have learned from them.
    Those who followed the Way of Christ faithfully,
    We follow their example.
    Those who made mistakes along the way,
    We learn from their experience.
    Those who made progress for peace,
    We continue their work.
    Those who lived simply and quietly,
    We are enlightened by them.
    Those who gained honor and distinction without pride,
    We are humbled by them.
    Those who were martyred for their faith,
    We commend them to your care.
    We remember and name out loud in particular:
    They have finished their work on earth,
    And it lives on,
    Reverberating into our lives now
    As the work of Christ lives on.

    May the peace of Christ continue to inspire us
    To good works, humility, simplicity and peacemaking,
    As those foremothers and forefathers were inspired by him
    To live in grace and love. Amen.

    SEALING OF THE WORD

    INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

    GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
    The Lord be with you.
    And also with you.
    Lift up your hearts.
    We lift them up to the Lord.
    Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
    It is right to give our thanks and praise.

    THE LORD'S PRAYER
    …Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

    WORDS OF INSTITUTION ||| SHARING OF THE MEAL
    All who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord, regardless of age or denomination, are invited to partake in the Sacrament of Communion. Please come forward down the side aisle. Take a piece of the bread and a cup and eat. Please dispose of the cups in the waste baskets by the table. We have gluten free bread available. Return to your seat by the center aisle.

    PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
    God of glory, in this holy feast you have made us one with Christ and with that great multitude of the faithful—those who hunger and thirst no more and worship night and day in your temple. Lead us in the paths of righteousness and guide us to the springs of the water of life, until we join the choir of the redeemed, singing: Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb: Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    WE GO IN GOD’S NAME
